In order to become a paramedic, you typically need to meet certain educational and certification requirements. These can vary by jurisdiction, but generally include:
- Completing a formal education program in paramedicine, which is typically offered at the certificate or associate degree level
- Obtaining certification as a paramedic from the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) or a state-specific certification agency
- Holding a current certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
- Having a valid driver’s license
- Meeting any additional requirements specific to your state or employer
Additionally, most paramedics have prior experience as emergency medical technicians (EMTs) before becoming paramedics, and have to pass a test and/or have a certain number of experience as EMT before being accepted to a paramedic program.
Also, some states also require a background check or drug screening prior to certification and/or employment.
