Why are Niger and Nigeria separate?

Between 1890 and 1905, the territorial expansion of French and British imperialism defined the border that now separates modern-day Niger and Nigeria. During the colonial era, both sides of the border were influenced by the respective languages, cultures, and political traditions of the French and English colonizers. Nigeria shares its northern boundary with Niger. The separation of Niger and Nigeria into distinct countries is a result of historical, cultural, and political factors. Despite their similar-sounding names, each nation possesses its own unique identity and history.
